Ban inhumane glue traps in Northern Ireland

Ban inhumane glue traps in Northern Ireland
The Issue
I started this petition to call for a ban on the sale and use of cruel glue traps in Northern Ireland, which are used as a means of “pest” control, aimed at rats and mice.
Glue traps are trays coated with an extremely strong adhesive. Any animal who touches one becomes immobilised. Glue traps are completely indiscriminate ensnaring wildlife, small mammals and birds. Companion animals have also fallen victim.
Glue traps provide an enticing area that an animal will want to explore. Animals unfortunate enough to become trapped will suffer extreme distress. Whilst frantically trying to get away, they will often rip off patches of fur, skin and feathers, break bones and even gnaw through their limbs in a bid to escape. Trapped animals suffer for days and a slow, agonising death by exhaustion, starvation, dehydration, blood loss, or suffocation will ensue.
Glue traps are legal, inexpensive and widely available to purchase in Northern Ireland. England have banned glue traps, with a two year transition period, Scottish government have made a commitment to ban and Welsh government are considering a ban. Northern Ireland must fall into line with the rest of the UK and draw up legislation to outlaw glue traps.
I have spoken with Mr Brendan Mullen, Chief Executive, USPCA, who has previously brought this to the attention of All Party Group in Animal Welfare (Northern Ireland Assembly) and Edwin Poots (DAERA). Hopefully this petition will assist USPCA’s endeavours to put a ban into place.
If you encounter an animal who is stuck to a glue trap, place a few drops of cooking oil or baby oil in between the glue and the animal, and gently work the animal free.
