One day after school I was sitting in my car with my mother in a meeting when we noticed that 5 men were getting out of the car behind us and setting up protest signs. Then I noticed what their shirts and signs said. They were all hateful homophobic, transphobic, pro life, and sexist phrases such as "TRANSGENDERS: Liars, Insane, Psychotic, Murderers, Women Haters". I was in shock. We ended the meeting and my mom went inside to tell the school staff what was going on. I felt extremely unsafe and directly threatened. When she got back and heard what they were saying, she told them how inappropriate it was that they were saying hateful things to students and they retaliated by saying god hates us and we are going to hell. They then proceeded to call me specifically names, including slurs. I fought as hard as I could without crying from seeing all the hate. My mother then went and reported to the cops how they were verbally harassing me with slurs. When I called the police they said they cannot do anything because they were on public property. While they do have the right to exercise their freedom of speech, it does not seem right to be hatefully protesting in front of a building full of children and directing hateful speech individually.

My goal is to alter the law so that protesters cannot protest within more than 1,000 feet from school property. This would help stop the traumatic experiences children will have from experiencing the hate. Kids should feel safe at school and should not have to worry about being verbally harassed. Exempting student protests and walkouts. I will then bring the awareness and bring this petition to city council.

Unfortunately, there will forever be hate speech in the world but it does not belong on school grounds where students should feel safe.
