Ban grass during the worst drought in 2,000 years!
The Issue
We are in the worst drought since A.D. 800 and yet people are still wasting copious amounts of water for unnecessary things which needs to cease if we are to have a sustainable future. Water sources are dwindling around the globe and there is no future for grass in most places anymore, especially for lawns, cemeteries, sports fields, golf courses and patches throughout cities, all of which should be replaced with native plants to withstand the extreme temperature fluctuations we're experiencing in America and abroad.
Please, forgo car washes since precious water should only be used for the living, not wasted on inanimate objects. The same applies to fountains, unused pools, washing asphalt and concrete driveways, fixing leaking faucets, toilets, turning off water when brushing teeth/shaving, taking short showers intermittently etc.
We do not have the luxury of water being in abundance anymore, so please address this as soon as possible to conserve what is left. Desalination plants are not great options as a water resource since the saline residue is usually equivalent or greater than the output of water in the reverse osmosis process which not only severely harms surrounding wildlife but is irresponsibly dumped too, falsely assuming no devastation is committed.
Individual choices matter so please don’t believe this statement “I’m just one person, how could I possibly help?” Just think, if one person thinks that times millions or billions of others then well, our efforts will be in vain! Be the change you want to see in the world!
Some statistics:
*If the average sized lawn in the United States is watered for 20 minutes every day for 7 days, it’s like running the shower constantly for 4 days or taking more than 800 showers. That's equivalent to the amount of water needed for the average family to take 1 years’ worth of showers. -EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)
*The average car wash consumes 65-80 gallons of water for each vehicle, which means if 100 vehicles visit an automatic in-bay wash, that's ~195,000-240,000 gallons in a month and 2,340,000-2,880,000 gallons in a year. There are OVER 60,000 car washes in America! (detailpropos/statistics)
*A 110-115 acre 18-hole golf course uses 90,000,000 gallons of either fresh or reclaimed water in a year (ca.golf) just to hit a ball into a hole.
*Household leaks can waste approximately nearly 900 billion gallons of water annually nationwide. That's equal to the annual household water use of nearly 11 million homes. -EPA (Environmental Protection Agency; all below too)
*Running the dishwasher only when it's full can eliminate one load of dishes per week and save the average family nearly 320 gallons of water annually.
*Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can save 8 gallons of water per day and, while shaving, can save 10 gallons of water per shave.
*Assuming you brush your teeth twice daily and shave 5 times per week, you could save nearly 5,700 gallons per year.
*Letting your faucet run for five minutes while washing dishes can waste 10 gallons of water and uses enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 18 hours.
*The average family spends more than $1,000 per year in water costs, but can save more than $380 annually from retrofitting with WaterSense labeled fixtures and ENERGY STAR certified appliances.
