Every day, as I scroll through social media, I'm bombarded with gambling advertisements that seem impossible to escape. It's frustrating and overwhelming to see these promotions constantly targeting me, my friends, and millions of others in Alberta. This relentless invasion into our digital space has reached a tipping point, and it’s time we put a stop to it.

Gambling advertisements are designed to be enticing and alluring, often glamorizing what is, for many, a destructive habit. Studies have consistently shown that exposure to gambling advertisements can lead to increased gambling activity, particularly among vulnerable groups like young people and those struggling with gambling addiction. According to a report by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC), over 75% of Albertans participate in some form of gambling each year. With such high involvement, the inundation of these ads further exacerbates gambling-related issues, leading to financial hardships and, in severe cases, addiction and family breakdowns.

Many countries have already taken bold steps to regulate or even ban gambling ads due to their harmful impact. For instance, Italy banned all gambling-related advertising in 2019 to prevent these very issues. Similarly, the UK is tightening regulations around gambling ads to protect the public, especially vulnerable individuals. Alberta can and should follow this progressive lead to safeguard its citizens and promote a healthier environment.

The solution is clear: we need a legislative ban on gambling advertisements across all platforms in Alberta. By restricting these ads, we can significantly reduce their negative impact, protect young people from being lured into gambling, and support those in recovery from gambling addiction.
