Government should roll out ban on fur farming
Letter, Irish Examiner, November 10th, 2020

The detection of a mutated strain of coronavirus in mink at Danish fur farms should set the alarm bells ringing in Ireland because we still have three mink farms operating.

The Programme for Government included a commitment to ban or phase out fur farming on animal welfare grounds. It is an extremely cruel practice where thousands of mink are confined in unnatural conditions before being dragged out of their tiny cages and gassed to death.

The Government should implement its pledge and ban fur farming immediately, to safeguard public health and end the misery of all those incarcerated aquatic creatures that are deprived of their freedom and forced to live through a hell on earth, away from the waterways and the wide open countryside that is their natural domain.

The apparent link between farmed mink and coronavirus should also serve as a reminder that man’s gross ill-treatment of non-humans and increasingly aggressive interference with the natural order in the animal kingdom is not without its truly nightmarish consequences.
