Animals don’t have rights, mink are mindless and the mink permanently caged on fur farms and cruelly gassed to death at 6 months of age are “LIKE CHILDREN TO US” - some of the ridiculous remarks from a former fur farmer on RTE’s Morning Ireland today (21/6/2019).

The comments came after Solidarity TD, Ruth Coppinger - whose Fur Farming Prohibition Bill will be before the Dail next month - told listeners about the awful suffering of mink, saying “their entire lives and their deaths are extremely cruel.”

She highlighted the calls by Veterinary Ireland for fur farming to be banned and a Red C opinion poll which confirms that an 80 per cent majority of citizens support a ban.

The former mink fur farmer interviewed on the show dismissed the idea that it is cruel to cage mink - semi-aquatic creatures who, on fur farms, are denied their basic instincts to roam, swim and hunt and can be seen repeatedly pacing back and forth and jumping against the bars of their cages to try and get free.

“It all began when Walt Disney gave Mickey Mouse a human personality,” he declared. “That’s when animal rights thinking began.”

He went on to say that “mink are reared for the quality of their fur - they are like children to us. We look after them, so we do”.

Asked if mink have rights, he insisted: “No. Animals don’t have rights. Human beings have the rights.”

He claimed that “a mink is a mindless creature...they don’t think.”

Responding, Deputy Coppinger questioned if he was an expert and had done research into animal intelligence, adding that “the level of intelligence of an animal doesn’t mean that they should be mistreated by humans for no reason.”

“I think that’s why 80 per cent of people have come out and said that this is barbaric,” she commented.

Please keep the pressure on politicians to vote in favour of Solidarity’s Fur Farming Prohibition Bill which will be debated in Dail Eireann on 3rd July, with a vote on 4th July - see below for contact details.
