Great news from Germany where the country’s last remaining fur farm has just shut down.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is reporting this week that even though a 5-year phase-out of fur farming was not due to end until 2022, “the animals didn’t have to wait that long - the last fur farmer there has called it quits”.
“His farm in Rahden now stands empty, and fur farming is over in the country,” the group added.
It was reported that the final fur farmer’s premature departure from the cruel trade was hastened by frequent government inspections as well as pressure from animal advocates.
Here in Ireland, fur farming continues at three locations in Laois, Kerry and Donegal where thousands of mink suffer a life of misery. They are permanently caged before being gassed to death at six month of age. The government shamefully insists that there will be no ban. This despite an opinion poll showing 8 in 10 citizens want it ended and a statement from Veterinary Ireland condemning fur farming as CRUEL.
