"It is not possible to farm mink in a way that is not incredibly cruel": Solidarity TD Paul Murphy has today renewed calls for a ban on fur farming in Ireland. In an exchange with Agriculture Minister, Michael Creed, Deputy Murphy highlighted that Veterinary Ireland has recommended a ban on fur farming and that 80 per cent of the Irish public are in favour of a ban.
Responding to the Minister's defence of the cruel industry on employment grounds, Deputy Murphy emphasised that there is "no substantial permanent employment in fur farming" and that if there is a negative impact on employment, he is in favour of alternative opportunities being offered to anyone affected.
He went on to say that fur farming is "arguably already illegal" in Ireland, pointing to an EU directive which states that no animal shall be kept for farming purposes if it has a detrimental affect on the animal's health or welfare.
Solidarity's Fur Farm Prohibition Bill will be back before the Dail before the summer. Please contact Minister Creed, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and all your local TDs to urge them to support a long overdue ban on fur farming.
