Ban Fog Machines

Ban Fog Machines
The Issue
We, the undersigned, urgently call on the organizers of Medicine for The People to ban the use of fog machines at all future events due to significant health risks to attendees and potential harm to local wildlife, particularly given the outdoor setting of these gatherings.
At a recent Medicine for The People event, a fog machine created a thick, lingering haze that enveloped the dance floor during a DJ set. Attendees unknowingly inhaled this haze, resulting in multiple reports of sinus irritation, headaches, and fatigue during and after the event. Fog machines, which often use glycol-based or chemical fluids, are known to cause respiratory irritation, eye discomfort, and neurological symptoms like headaches. These health issues disrupted the well-being of participants and undermined the healing ethos of the gathering.
Additionally, as Medicine for The People events are held outdoors, the use of fog machines poses a threat to nearby wildlife. Chemical particles from fog fluids can settle on soil, plants, and water sources, potentially harming local ecosystems, including birds, insects, and small mammals. This contradicts the event’s mission of fostering harmony and connection with nature.
To ensure Medicine for The People remains a safe, inclusive, and environmentally responsible space, we propose the following safer alternatives to fog machines that can maintain the event’s immersive atmosphere:
- LED Lighting and Laser Effects: Dynamic, customizable light shows that create vibrant visuals without health or environmental risks.
- Dry Ice Machines: Low-lying fog effects that dissipate quickly, minimizing inhalation risks and environmental impact.
- Bubble Machines: Non-toxic, biodegradable bubble solutions for a playful, safe effect.
- Scent Diffusers: Hypoallergenic essential oil diffusers to enhance the sensory experience with natural, healing aromas.
We respectfully demand:
An immediate ban on fog machines at all Medicine for The People events to protect attendee health and local wildlife.
A public acknowledgment of the health and environmental concerns raised by attendees and a commitment to prioritizing safety and ecological responsibility.
The adoption of safe, non-chemical alternatives like LED lighting, dry ice effects, or aromatherapy to preserve the event’s atmosphere without compromising well-being or the environment.
Transparency about any atmospheric effects used at future events, including advance notice to attendees about their safety and composition.
By signing this petition, we stand together to ensure Medicine for The People upholds its mission as a healing, inclusive, and environmentally conscious gathering. We urge the organizers to act swiftly to protect both their community and the natural world.
