Ban fireworks at homes and allow only organised displays

The Issue

Fireworks have long been associated with celebrations and festivities, lighting up the sky with dazzling displays. However, for many of us, these beautiful visuals are accompanied by feelings of anxiety, stress, and distress, both mental and physical. As a person who struggles with mental health issues, I know firsthand the adverse effects that random fireworks in neighborhoods can trigger. The unexpected loud noises exacerbate my condition, but my concern doesn't stop with myself.

Our beloved pets and various wildlife are equally, if not more, affected. Animals have more acute hearing than humans, making every booming firework a terrifying experience. Numerous reports indicate a rise in pets fleeing their homes in panic, getting injured, or even facing fatal outcomes during firework seasons. The situation calls for respectful consideration of our furry friends who share this environment with us.

Beyond immediate mental and physical distress, fireworks contribute significantly to environmental pollution. The remnants of chemical explosions float in the air, settling into ecosystems and water sources, endangering overall health and biodiversity. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), fireworks are a source of high particulate matter, releasing heavy metals and toxins detrimental to both nature and human health.

The most tangible solution to these concerns is to ban private use of fireworks and limit displays to organised, community-run events. This can ensure that those who wish to enjoy fireworks can still do so in a safe, controlled, and predictable environment. Organised displays can implement noise reduction technologies, be conducted in allocated open spaces to minimize disturbance, and use eco-friendly alternatives to traditional pyrotechnics.

Local governments and policymakers have the power to enact this change to protect mental health, animal welfare, and the environment. Let's come together to push for legislation that restricts fireworks to only those places and events that can effectively manage their impact.

I urge everyone who has ever felt the overwhelming downside of home-based fireworks, on behalf of yourself, your loved ones, or the planet, to sign this petition today. Join me in advocating for a safer, quieter, and healthier celebration for all. Your support is crucial in making this change a reality.
