Ban firecrackers during Diwali (Nov 2026) in Mumbai due to the AQI
The Issue
Every year, Diwali should be a time of joy and celebration, filled with lights, laughter, and the warmth of family and friends. Yet, for many like me, living in Mumbai during this festival brings anxiety, discomfort, and even severe health risks. The reason? The overwhelming pollution caused by firecrackers.
Last year, during the festivities, I found myself struggling to breathe, confined indoors due to the thick blanket of smog that enveloped our city. It wasn’t just me—my family and countless others had to endure the same suffocating air. According to a report by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), air pollution levels in Mumbai spike to hazardous levels during Diwali, with particulate matter (PM2.5) rising alarmingly. These tiny particles are known to penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, leading to serious respiratory illnesses and other health problems.
By imposing a ban on firecrackers from November 5th to 15th in 2026, we can take a significant step towards cleaner air and a healthier festive season for all Mumbaikars. Cities like Delhi have already implemented similar measures with positive outcomes, showing us that it is possible to celebrate without compromising our health or the environment.
We propose alternative celebrations that focus on the essence of Diwali—using eco-friendly lamps, engaging in community activities, and promoting cultural events—ensuring the spirit of the festival is preserved while protecting our environment.
Our future depends on the actions we take today. By signing this petition, you will be advocating for a safer, healthier, and cleaner Diwali for everyone in Mumbai. Join me and help make our city a beacon of environmental responsibility. Let’s make a difference together, one festival at a time.
Sign this petition to urge the government to implement a ban on firecrackers in Mumbai from November 5th to 15th, 2026, and protect our air for the future.
