The second wolf sadly passed away in spite of Aspen Wildlife sanctuary and Dr Sherri's best efforts. He seemed to improve for a couple of days with being hydrated, given electrolytes and slow feeding. It was likely from organ failure due to the severity of his starvation and dehydration. I am heartsick at the struggle the poor animal endured at the hands of and due to the whim of humans. Dr Sherri estimated it took the wolf a week to chew through the stainless steel snare cable breaking several teeth in the process. In spite of being incredibly emaciated he had developed extra muscle on his neck from pulling. He was likely struggling to get free for weeks. I feel the trappers association should be charged with cruelty to animals. The problem is that there are no laws to protect wildlife from cruelty. The trapping association is well financed with fees from hunting organizations, corporations and "conservation" groups. Even the Canadian Wildlife federation supports them. With being well financed, well organized and the fact they lobby hard and there are no laws to protect wildlife it would be hard to get a judge to look at the case. The trapping association even shut down a new bill to improve animal protection even though it only pertained to companion animals in fear that any improvement in animal rights would threaten them. Canadian animal laws were developed in the 1800's We must not give up. Write your Mps, the MNR, the local newspapers, spread the word and educate people, donate to well researched organization that do good work for animals and especially make your voice heard in the way you shop. Bless you all for caring.
