Social Democrats TD Catherine Murphy has questioned the Minister for Agriculture about a fundraiser for “retired coursing greyhounds” which took place at a coursing meeting at Powerstown Park in Clonmel last year.
The Kildare North TD asked the Minister “if his attention has been drawn to a fundraiser by an organisation [Irish Coursing Club] in respect of retired coursing greyhounds in view of the fact it does not have a homing section”.
A notice on the Irish Coursing Club website at the time outlined that “a bucket collection will be taken up for retired coursing greyhounds. All attending are asked to give as generously as possible”. The fundraiser was carried out “in association with the ICC”.
Deputy Murphy asked how much money was raised and “if other organisations received moneys from the collection”.
Responding, Minister Charlie McConalogue (Donegal, Fianna Fail) stated: “The Irish Coursing Club is a private club with an Executive Committee that manages the affairs of the club. The Irish Coursing Club receives no funding from Government and my Department has no remit with regard to its financial operations.”
Months earlier, when coursing was halted due to the deadly RHD2 virus, the focus was on destroying greyhounds, not rehoming them. There were threats from coursers that greyhounds would be killed if the then Heritage Minister didn’t allow their bloodsport to resume, despite the identification in Ireland of a virus which threatens to wipe out the Irish Hare population.
Newstalk reported in October 2019 that "5,000 greyhounds could be put down if the suspension on coursing isn't lifted".
“There are currently 5,000 coursing dogs in Ireland,” the station reported. “Some of them will race on the track, while some will be re-homed, but the majority will ultimately have to be put down.”
In 2015, the Irish Council Against Blood Sports highlighted that the Irish Coursing Club was callously advising greyhound owners not to rehome unwanted greyhounds but to destroy them instead. In a damning internal report, owners were advised: “Do not give away unwanted greyhounds. It is far better to put them painlessly to sleep.”
What constitutes putting a dog “painlessly to sleep” was not specified in the document.
Entitled “A Summary of Directives, Instructions and Guidance Notes Issued by the Executive Committee of the Irish Coursing Club to Club Secretaries, Control Stewards Judges and Slippers” the report conveyed the contempt with which coursers regard greyhounds incapable of winning money for their owners. Dogs “that have run a number of times during the season” without success were branded “no-hopers”.
