Independent Wexford TD Verona Murphy has described the government's decision to stop hare coursing and point-to-point racing during COVID-19 Level 5 restrictions as “an unjustified attack on livelihoods in rural Ireland”.
Quoted in Agriland today, Deputy Murphy said that it was "very disappointing that the government appears to have given no explanation of its sudden change of mind regarding the status of both sports.”
She has called for compensation for coursers and the organisers (foxhunts) of point-to-point races.
“The government appears to have no plan to support or compensate for the losses incurred by those who rely on the industry to make their living," she said. “Deputy Jackie Cahill asked the Tánaiste last week if supports would be provided to the sector and the Tánaiste admitted that he didn’t know. This is totally unacceptable."

Verona Murphy is very much in the minority in supporting cruel hare coursing. A RED C poll carried out in 2019 found that a majority of citizens in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban on the bloodsport.
Her call for compensation for coursers follows a similar call earlier this month from Fianna Fail TD Jackie Cahill. Agriland quoted him as saying “Covid-19 has essentially prevented the 2020/2021 coursing season from going ahead. There are many people in Tipperary who rely on the short coursing season for a livelihood and they will this year have to go without this.” He is also pushing for government support to be given to track bookmakers.
Previously, Fianna Fail TD James Lawless also urged the government to compensate bookies affected by COVID-19 restrictions. In a 10th November Dail Question, the Kildare North TD asked the Minister for Agriculture “if tailored Covid-19 support packages have been put in place to compensate on-course bookmakers that maintain stands at race tracks known as seniorities which are a form of premises”
