The Irish Wildlife Trust has this week restated its support for a ban on “cruel and barbaric” coursing and warned that the activity is “very high risk” for the Irish Hare.
Quoted in a report in The Times (UK), IWT campaigns officer Pádraic Fogarty stated: “We have been against hare coursing for three or four decades now, we would love to see it banned. We would feel strongly that it is a cruel and barbaric activity. I wouldn’t call it a sport.” https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/pamela-anderson-urges-taoiseach-to-ban-hare-coursing-in-ireland-m7rlbngpb
Mr Fogarty warned that coursers netting and confining thousands of hares risks spreading the deadly Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease which was identified in hares in Ireland last year and again this year.
“It is an ugly disease, it makes them bleed out their eyes and they die a horrible death,” he commented. “With hare coursing, what they are doing is they are taking hares from the wild and keeping them in captivity and so you are creating conditions to spread disease, so the hare coursing is a very high risk thing to be doing to help spread the disease.”
He pointed out that the Irish Hare - “one of our few indigenous mammals that has been in Ireland for thousands of years” - has already seen “drastically” reduced numbers and that it was important that the remaining hares are protected.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service previously confirmed that the RHD2 virus can be spread on nets and boxes used by coursers to catch and trap hares. Dr Ferdia Marnell of the NPWS has said that the disease is "highly infectious" and "the catching of hares in nets, their transportation in boxes, and their holding in confined areas can all be considered to increase the risk of disease spread."
The previous Minister for Culture and Heritage, Josepha Madigan acknowledged that the virus “has the potential to wipe out the hare population completely”.
Despite this, current Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien recklessly issued a 2020-21 licence which allows coursers to continue netting hares from the wild and using them as live lures for greyhounds to chase. Join us in urging Minister O’Brien and the government to ban coursing and give permanent protection to the Irish Hare.
This would be widely welcomed by the public. A RED C opinion poll carried out in September 2019 found that 77% want the government to ban coursing, while only 9% want coursing to continue.
URGENT ACTION ALERT
Urge Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tanaiste Leo Varadkar to respect the wishes of the 77% majority of Irish citizens who want coursing banned.
