For the third time in two weeks, Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath has shamefully raised the issue of cruel hare coursing in Dail Eireann.
Speaking on Tuesday (Nov 3, 2020), the Independent TD questioned Taoiseach Micheal Martin about the suspension of coursing and also pheasant shooting.
“Two weeks ago we saw the coursing industry with a hammer blow that stopped the coursing even though there were clubs in the middle of it,” he stated. “Today I ask you about somebody who issued a regulation or a diktat last Thursday evening that pheasant shooting season, [which was due to] open on 1 November - [shooters] wouldn’t be allowed to go out with their gun and their dog, out into the wilds. Many of these clubs and huntsmen - they do huge work for preservation - like my own club, Ardfinnan, Newcastle, Ballybacon [gun club]. All they’re interested in is going out for a day's exercise with their gun and their dog and they’re not allowed. I want to know who or what department or Minister issued this diktat that they couldn’t go out to do their game shooting on 1 November, like every other year?”
Last month, Mattie McGrath farcically claimed in the Dail that cruel coursers “nurture hares and look after them” and that involvement in the deplorable bloodsport is “VERY GOOD FOR MENTAL HEALTH”.
In another speech the following day, he falsely claimed that “there are thousands of jobs and millions of euros” in coursing and laughably maintained that hare coursing is "good for the children and the adults".
In supporting cruel coursing, Mattie McGrath is most definitely in the minority. A RED C opinion poll confirmed that a 77% majority of Irish citizens want an end to the obscene practice, while just 9% want it to continue.
