Ban Commercial Fisheries from decimating Shark Populations

The Issue

I have always held a deep care for the ocean and its inhabitants. Life began there, and it is disheartening to see these vital ecosystems being threatened. The ocean is integral to our survival, providing every second breath we take due to the phytoplankton blooms. However, it's horrifying to learn that even here in the UK, people are unwittingly consuming endangered shark species. This is largely because DEFRA, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, permits the sale of shark meat under six generic names that mislead consumers.

The repercussions of this deception are severe. An estimated 100 million sharks are killed every year, supporting a destructive market driven by their valuable livers, which produce squalene, and the demand for their meat. Sharks play an essential role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. Their decline signifies a threat not just to marine life, but to humanity itself.

The commercial fishing industry, driven by profit, continues to exploit these magnificent creatures without restraint, depleting shark populations to an unsustainable level. We need urgent action to regulate these practices. DEFRA must be held accountable for the misleading labeling that disguises shark meat and fuels this trade. By implementing transparent labeling, consumers will be informed and can make ethical purchasing decisions, reducing the demand for shark products.

Legislation should also focus on stopping the destructive dredging methods used by commercial fisheries. These practices not only kill sharks but also damage the ocean floor, disrupting habitats and endangering countless other marine species. Creating sustainable fishing practices is essential in preserving the ocean's future and our own.

Together, we have the power to drive change. By demanding stricter regulations and transparency, we can protect the ocean and its inhabitants from further harm. Stand with me in calling for immediate reform. Sign this petition to urge DEFRA to implement truthful labeling and ban harmful fishing practices. Together, let’s secure a future where our oceans thrive, ensuring the survival of sharks and the health of our planet. Please add your signature to this cause today.
