Sinn Fein TD Paul Donnelly has expressed support for a ban on cruel fox hunting ahead of the party’s upcoming Ard Fheis.

“I fully support motion 29,” Deputy Donnelly (Dublin West) stated in a message to the Irish Council Against Blood Sports this week. “I am hopeful it will pass.”

Motion 29 is one of two fox hunting related motions that will be presented on Day 1 of the Ard Fheis on Friday 24th April.

It calls on the party to “support a BAN on the practice of fox hunting with dogs for the sole purpose of leisure”, stating that "the hunting of foxes using dogs for the sole purpose of leisure is unavoidably cruel and by necessity inflicts terror, exhaustion, irrevocable injury, and death on the foxes involved".

If the motion is passed, Sinn Fein will commit to “support a ban on the practice of fox hunting with dogs for the sole purpose of leisure”.

A vote on Motion 29 will only take place if a previous motion (28) is rejected. Motion 28 calls on party delegates to support the continuation of fox hunting, ie that it is "regulated" but not banned.

Thank you to Deputy Donnelly for pushing for a ban on fox hunting. He has previously stated: “I am opposed to blood ‘sports’ and I find that term offensive. I would fully support a ban on these activities.”
