Foxes were terrorised by a pack of 39 dogs during a shameful Fingal Harriers hunt.
A report in the Irish Field outlined that at the start of the hunt, two foxes were disturbed near a quarry before being chased “right-handed across country to Joe Rooney’s plantation” and “over the Hedgestown Road all the way down to the main road”.
Another fox was seen running for his life near Hedgestown Lane - “this fox ran back in the direction of the Man O War [pub] to Slevin’s, where they marked him to ground.”
It is unknown if this fox survived or was torn apart by the hounds. In fox hunting terminology, “marked to ground” refers to the point when the pack of hounds chase the fox into an earth or drain. This is typically followed by the arrival of the hunt’s terriermen who cruelly catch the fox using shovels, spades and terriers before the doomed animal is pulled out and brutally killed.
Later, “hounds found again and they got a short spin over McNeill’s stubble, which took them to the top road” and after that a fox was disturbed in a ditch.
According to the 15 November 2024 Irish Field report, the huntsman marked 5 foxes to ground.
Shame on the Irish Government for allowing this bloodsport to continue. A RED C opinion poll, commissioned by the Irish Council Against Blood Sports, shows that a 77% majority (in both urban and rural areas) agree that the government should ban fox hunting. The poll found that just 12 per cent disagree with a ban.
