Foxes were terrorised by a pack of 25 dogs during a hunt in County Wexford.
A report in the Irish Field outlined that at the Wicklow Hunt, which started from the Top Shop Bar in Coolgreany, “hounds found in The Grove and screamed away on a fox over Kavanagh’s, Jimmy Hill’s, on through Declan Merrigan’s, where he went to ground”. The fate of this fox was not revealed.
The 10 January 2025 report went on to state that later in the day, hounds “quickly found in Hudson’s Shirsheen Wood near The Quarry”.
This fox ran for his life, which the Irish Field described as being “game for a run”. He “crossed over Michael Byrne’s and then on through the long valley, which has wonderful coverts that foxes tend to run through, but this fellow decided to dwell in a clump of furze, but not for long as the pack pressed him on by Larry Lyons’, who keeps greyhounds, for a good fast spin”. This fox went underground and, according to the report, “was left for another day”.
Another fox was forced to run for his life in “John Joe McCarthy’s Ballafad Wood” - hounds “pressed on with their heads down stopping and starting again and again”.
Shame on the Irish Government for allowing this bloodsport to continue in 2025. A RED C opinion poll, commissioned by the Irish Council Against Blood Sports, shows that a 77% majority (in both urban and rural areas) agree that the government should ban fox hunting. The poll found that just 12 per cent disagree with a ban.
DID YOU KNOW? Irish taxpayer-funded Horse Racing Ireland has handed out €13,796,550 to hunts since 2014 (in the form of point to point racing grants), including over €1.7 million for 2024. The Wicklow Hunt hunt has received €115,250 in that period, including €19,600 in 2024.
