Update petisiBan Blood Sports in IrelandFox killed by hounds during Limerick hunt

A fox who desperately ran for his life, with a pack of hounds “only yards behind”, was caught and killed during a Scarteen Foxhounds hunt in County Limerick.

A sickening 3-page article in British magazine “Horse and Hound” (27 February 2025) told of how the dogs were in a “dark belt of pine trees” and the unfortunate fox was seen “running along the edge of a field [with] the pack only yards behind in the fullest of full cry”. https://www.magzter.com/stories/animals-pets/Horse-Hound/NOAHS-HOUNDS

The pack “swiftly accounted for him” [killed him] in a briary ditch.

The terrorisation of this fox was described as “a brief but exciting scurry”.

The shameful hunt with over 20 hunters on horseback took place across “sodden pasture” - the ground was “so wet that even the hounds threw up little splashes of water as they worked across it”.

Later in the day another fox was targeted in a covert. The hounds “pushed their fox into the open and were running hard north-west”. They were “hunting relentlessly” in an evergreen plantation and the fox was seen running for his life.

“Back we flew in the direction whence we had come, over the same drain, even less inviting now with its sides scored and greasy,” the report continued. “Hounds finally marked their fox to ground in faultless style near his original refuge, and we pulled up for a much-needed breather.”

The fate of this fox was not revealed but in fox hunting terminology, “marked to ground” refers to the point when the pack of hounds chase the fox into an earth or drain. This is typically followed by the arrival of the hunt’s terriermen who cruelly catch the fox using shovels, spades and terriers before the doomed animal is pulled out and brutally killed.

Among those at this shameful hunt were “Olympic eventer Michael Ryan, who cut his teeth whipping-in to this famous pack”, Michael Condon “doyen of Irish showjumping coaches” and showjumper Shane Breen.

According to the report, “Shane adores his hunting” and is one of the hunt masters - “though based in Hickstead [UK], he makes it home for 9 or 10 days’ hunting each season.”

Shane Breen has been a brand ambassador for horse feed company Connolly’s Red Mills. A page on its website states: “Shane got his first pony at the age of five and hunted throughout his childhood. He believes this hunting background has placed him in good stead...” https://www.redmillshorse.com/en-us/red-mills-ambassadors/shane-breen/

Shame on Connolly’s Red Mills for having a fox hunter as a brand ambassador. And shame on the Irish Government for allowing this cruel bloodsport to continue in 2025. A RED C opinion poll, commissioned by the Irish Council Against Blood Sports, shows that a 77% majority (in both urban and rural areas) agree that the government should ban fox hunting. The poll found that just 12 per cent disagree with a ban.
DID YOU KNOW? Irish taxpayer-funded Horse Racing Ireland has handed out €13,796,550 to hunts since 2014 (in the form of point to point racing grants), including over €1.7 million for 2024. The Scarteen Foxhounds hunt has received €128,750, including €17,850 in 2024.

ACTION ALERT

It’s time for a ban on cruel fox hunting. Contact TDs and urge them to support Ruth Coppinger TD's Animal Health & Welfare (Ban On Fox Hunting) Bill when it returns to Dail Eireann.
