A hare was terrorised for 50 minutes by a pack of dogs during a shameful hunt in County Cavan.
A report in the Irish Field (28 February 2025) outlined how the unfortunate hare was forced to run for dear life during a Drumlin Harriers hunt.
“At 3.40pm, [huntsman] Odhran drew around the derelict Teeney School...and the omens looked good,” the report stated. “All of a sudden, a large pure white hare, a very rare sight as they are normally brown, popped up in the middle of the pack in Flanagan’s.”
This hare “brought [the pack of dogs] on the best run of the day” and was chased across a hill and through several townlands - “Rather than circle as most hares do, this one ran straight like a fox, over Fannings Hill, with the pack in full cry crossing various townlands, such as Plush, Keeney, Drumbran, Drumliff and Drumaharrid, where they lost her eventually, after a cracking run in Duggan’s Plantings at 4.30pm.”
Shame on the Irish Government for allowing this bloodsport to continue and refusing to remove the Irish Hare from the open season hunting list. Hunters are free to hunt and shoot hares from the end of September and throughout all of October, November, December, January and February.
The Open Season Order lists the “manner of hunting” hares as “shooting with firearms; coursing at regulated coursing matches; hunting with packs of beagles and harriers”. The hare may be persecuted and killed in this way “throughout the state exclusive of the townlands of North East Slob, North West Slob, Big Island, Beggerin Island and The Raven, in the county of Wexford”.

Contact the leaders of Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Sinn Fein and the Labour Party. Tell them that you want hare hunting, fox hunting, hare coursing and all bloodsports banned.
