A hare who was hit by a greyhound at a shameful coursing event in Clonakilty in January suffered an injured leg, recently released documents reveal.
A Clonakilty Coursing Club vet reported that an analgesic drug (painkiller) was administered to the hare after the animal was confirmed injured.
This hare was one of six hit by dogs at the 3-day animal cruelty event held on 10, 11, 12 January 2025.
They were among 50 hares netted from the wild between 5 December and 28 December 2024 and forced to run for their lives.
The vet who gave pain relief, had earlier certified the 50 hares “fit for coursing”.
The injured hare was kept by the coursing club “for observation” and according to them, was released a week later on 19 January.

How many more hares have to suffer before the Irish Government respects the wishes of the majority and bans this barbaric bloodsport. A RED C poll, commissioned by the Irish Council Against Blood Sports, found that 77% want coursing banned, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban. A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban.
Due to the cruelty involved, coursing is already illegal in all our neighbouring jurisdictions (Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales).
