Foxes were terrorised by a pack of 23 dogs "almost non-stop" for nearly five hours during a shameful hunt in County Limerick
A report in the Irish Field of 8 December 2023 outlined the victims of the Scarteen (Black and Tans) hunt on the day.
The bloodsport began when one of the hounds "shot into an impenetrable thorn thicket and, almost as fast, a fine dog fox popped out the other side and, with the pack rallying to him, they were off."
"This was to set the pattern for the day as hounds hunted almost non-stop, although not necessarily on the same fox, until the huntsman blew for home at 3.45pm," the report stated.
In pursuit of the unfortunate fox, the pack of dogs "crossed the Lattin/Glenbane Road into Ryan’s of Ballyconroy, whose hostelry had entertained riders just a short time before" and then "ran on over a series of high singles, guarded fore and aft by mini canals through Beston’s and Hourigan’s, before marking [the fox] to ground in Crotty’s near Shronell."
In foxhunting terminology, “marked to ground” refers to the point when the pack of hounds chase the fox into an earth or drain and this is typically followed by the arrival of the hunt’s terriermen to cruelly catch and kill the fox.
Another fox was forced to run for his life when at "their next draw across the Ballinalard Road in Condon’s, they found almost immediately".
Later, hunters and hounds terrorised a fox who "took the field on a guided tour of some of the biggest and best banks in Europe, finishing in Mairead English’s, which has banks to die for."
At 3.45pm, "hounds marked to ground in a previously unknown shore" and according to the Irish Field report, the fox "was left".
Among those shamefully involved in the fox hunt were Michael Ryan (whipper-in) who represented Ireland in eventing at the London Olympics, Grand National jockey Val O’Connell (field master) and show jumper Shane Breen.
Cruel fox hunting should not be happening in modern Ireland. A RED C opinion poll, commissioned by the Irish Council Against Blood Sports, shows that a 77% majority agree that the government should ban fox hunting. The poll found that just 12 per cent disagree with a ban on fox hunting.
