Sinn Fein TD Martin Browne (Tipperary) shamefully defended cruel hare coursing at the 2023 Sinn Fein Ard Fheis (10 Nov 2023). In his speech, Deputy Browne farcically claimed that "welfare standards have improved considerably" in the bloodsport which involves snatching thousands of hares from the wild, holding them captive for weeks/months and forcing them to run for their lives from pairs of dogs.
“I'm from a rural constituency where rural occupations such as hunting and hare coursing have a very strong base,” he told delegates.. The reality is that most people in both rural and urban areas want fox hunting and hare coursing banned. A RED C opinion poll found that 77% are in favour of a ban on both bloodsports, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban on coursing and 12% disagreeing with a ban on fox hunting.
