Social Democrats TD Cian O'Callaghan has restated his support for an end to cruel hare coursing.
“Hares are very important from both an environmental and cultural perspective in Ireland,” the Dublin Bay North TD stated in a message to ICABS. “Significantly, their importance is recognised in primary legislation by defining them as a protected species under the Wildlife Act 1976.”
Highlighting that his party colleague Jennifer Whitmore TD introduced the Protection of Hares Bill 2023 – which aims to stop the licensing of coursing – Deputy O'Callaghan added: “We will continue to strongly push for an end to this inhumane treatment of hares.”
He has previously condemned coursing as an "incredibly cruel practice” and emphasised that “the State should ensure that animals live lives free of pain and discomfort and that animals are strongly protected from cruelty, neglect and abandonment.”
