The Rose Hotel in Tralee is being urged not to host a hare coursing awards function in April.

According to a report in The Kerryman last week, “The Rose Hotel, Tralee is to be the venue on Sunday, April 30, for the annual awards ceremony / dinner dance of the Irish Coursing Club”.

The obscene coursing awards will take place following a season of suffering for hares. The animals are snatched from the wild in nets, kept in captivity for weeks or months and forced to run for their lives in front of dogs. The hares caught and mauled by the dogs sustain painful injuries and every coursing season, hare deaths are documented. Hares who survive the ordeal are at risk of later dying from stress-related capture myopathy.

Video footage captured by ICABS shows hares being mauled into the ground and knocked head over heels.

“Hare coursing is one of Ireland’s worst forms of animal cruelty. The Rose Hotel should not host a coursing awards function,” ICABS  stated in an appeal to hotel management. “Please show compassion for Irish wildlife and cancel this event at your hotel.”

“This awards event is for the owners of greyhounds unleashed to chase live hares in an activity considered cruel and barbaric by the majority of Irish citizens. Due to the cruelty involved, coursing is illegal in all our neighbouring jurisdictions (Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales) and there is an ongoing campaign to secure a ban here in the Republic.”

A RED C poll found that 77% want the Irish Government to ban coursing, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban. A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban.

ACTION ALERT

An awards event celebrating animal cruelty is an absolute obscenity. Please join us in appealing to The Rose Hotel Tralee not to host this event.
