The Campaign for the Abolition of Cruel Sports welcomes the High Court’s decision to refuse an injunction sought by County Kerry Coursing Club to prevent the owner of the former Tralee Racecourse from locking the club out of the venue, which it has used for a century to stage cruel hare coursing events.
The club had claimed in court that it was entitled to have its “sporting rights” respected, but its legal challenge was rejected by Mr. Justice Garrett Simons who is to give a more detailed judgement next week.
County Kerry has the worst record for hare coursing cruelty in Ireland. Other counties, such as Donegal and Mayo have only one coursing club each, and four counties, Monaghan, Wicklow, Longford and Leitrim have NO coursing clubs. Kerry has more than a dozen recognised coursing clubs and a high incidence of illegal coursing also.
Ballybeggan racecourse, from which Co. Kerry Coursing Club has now been locked out, witnessed scenes of stomach-churning savagery over the years.
Prior to 1993, hares were ripped apart at the venue in front of cheering fans, their screams echoing around Tralee so that even women hanging out washing in the town heard them.
After 1993, up to earlier this year, the cruelty continued under a different guise…with hares getting mauled, pinned to the ground by muzzled dogs and flung about like sliotars on a hurling field.
This is a great day for the hares of Ireland, but especially the ones that frolic in the scenic fields, hills and glens of the coursing blackspot that is Kerry. Sadly this county that has so much to offer in terms of heritage and tourism also plays host to sickening cruelty dressed up as sport and to politicians who actively support it.
A few weeks ago, Loughrea Coursing Club in Co Galway lost its hare-netting licence and the people of Millstreet in County Cork are up in arms over the use of their treasured Town Park for hare coursing.
The tide is turning against this medieval blood sport. We hope that more coursing clubs will be locked out or disbanded in the months and years to come and that former coursing venues are turned into building sites to provide much needed housing for the people of Ireland.
