In the High Court this month, coursers stated that there were 150 captured hares at Ballybeggan Park in Tralee but the Department of Heritage has confirmed that there are no hares on the grounds of the former Tralee Racecourse.
A Department of Heritage spokesperson told ICABS that “officials from the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Department of Agriculture inspected the grounds on Friday last, and both confirmed that there were no hares in the hare park or on the grounds of Ballybeggan.”
Were there 150 hares at Ballybeggan Park? Were they removed before the NPWS and Department of Agriculture officials carried out the inspection?
The Irish Examiner reported on Thursday last (18 August 2022) that at a High Court hearing at which Kerry Coursing Club failed to get an injunction to compel the racecourse to allow them access to the venue, the coursers told the court that they had been locked out since June 18th and they needed access to feed and care for 150 hares - which they ironically described as "very sensitive animals".
The Examiner report stated: “The club had claimed it needed keys so that it could get back into the park to feed and care for 150 hares that had been gathered from all over the country into a paddock in preparation for the new coursing season. It had normally started preparations as early as June for the opening of the September to January season. It is also due to take a delivery of feed for the hares to be stored at the park, which it currently cannot do.” https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/munster/arid-40943063.html
In correspondence to the Department, ICABS pointed out that if hares were present, it would appear that they had been captured illegally, as the licence issued by Housing and Heritage Minister Darragh O'Brien to snatch hares from the wild for use as live lures for greyhounds at coursing meetings only came into effect on 12th August, while Kerry Coursing Club told the High Court that they had been locked out of the venue since 18th June, almost two months before the valid licence.
We had urged Minister Darragh O'Brien to have the 150 hares inspected by National Parks & Wildlife Service personnel, assessed by a vet and released back into the wild and we called for Kerry Coursing Club to be investigated and prosecuted if they had illegally captured hares without a licence.
Meanwhile, we continue to call for a complete ban on live hare coursing and a withdrawal of the current licence which allows coursers to capture timid hares up until the end of February 2023.
Hare coursing is now outlawed in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, leaving our republic as the last outpost of this backwoods barbarism. 77% of Irish citizens agree that hare coursing and foxhunting should be banned, according to a RED C poll carried out in 2019.
