In a letter to the editor of the Longford Leader, ICABS stated: “Your newspaper has this week published photos from a ‘stylish’ hunt ball that took place recently. Readers were told that it was a ‘very enjoyable occasion’. What lies behind hunt balls is in no way stylish and certainly not enjoyable for the unfortunate animals targeted.”

“We call on the Longford Leader to please show compassion for persecuted wildlife and instead of associating style and glamour with hunting, expose its ugly reality,” we added.

Hunting involves unleashing a pack of dogs to terrorise and kill defenceless wildlife. When caught, the foxes and hares are attacked, knocked to the ground, bitten, disembowelled and ripped apart. A far cry from the "style" of a hunt ball.

The majority in Ireland want fox hunting outlawed. A RED C opinion poll has shown that a 77% majority are in favour of a ban, with just 12% disagreeing with a ban.
