Thank you to South Dublin County Councillor Carly Bailey for becoming the latest politician to express support for the campaign to ban cruel blood sports in Ireland.
“I can assure you of my support,” the Social Democrats Councillor told ICABS this week. “Animal welfare is something I am very passionate about.”
Cllr Bailey joins a growing list of Councillors/TDs/Senators who want bloodsports banned, including other members of South Dublin County Council:
Cllr Yvonne Collins (Fianna Fáil) - “I support a long overdue ban on hare coursing and fox hunting.”
Cllr Mick Duff (Independent) - “I fully favour a complete ban on coursing and foxhunting”
Cllr Louise Dunne (Sinn Féin) - “I would be happy to support a motion [in favour of a ban on bloodsports].”
Cllr Trevor Gilligan (Fianna Fáil) - “I would support a ban on foxhunting and hare coursing.”
Cllr Paul Gogarty (Independent) - “I’ll definitely support phasing out and banning hare coursing permanently...Hare coursing involves cruelty to both hares and dogs and this has to stop,”
Cllr Peter Kavanagh (Independent) - “I am fundamentally opposed to bloodsports and the exploitation of animals. Cruelty in the name of entertainment is not the hallmark of a civilised society.”
Cllr Pamela Kearns (Labour Party) - “I am against any cruelty to animals.”
Cllr Kieran Mahon (Solidarity) - “I am not a supporter of this form of ‘sport’ [hare coursing and foxhunting]”
Cllr Ronan McMahon (Renua) - “Yes, I am against these cruel activities [hare coursing and fox hunting] and against cruelty to animals in general.”
Cllr Liam Sinclair (Independent) - “I oppose animal cruelty in all its forms. Hunting for sport and fur farming have no place in a civilised society. I will advocate for stricter laws and more severe punishments at every opportunity.”
Cllr Francis Timmons (Independent)- "I fully support [an end to the licensing of hare coursing]. I am against coursing...I support a ban [on foxhunting and hare coursing]"
With a RED C opinion poll confirming that a 77 per cent majority of Irish citizens want hare coursing and foxhunting banned, it is now time for politicians to consign these nasty bloodsports to history.
