Hares were again running for their lives today as the cruel coursing season continued. Greyhounds chased hares at the Gorey, Cavan/Dungannon/Westport, Glin and North Kilkenny meetings. Coursing is due to take place again tomorrow and at more than 30 meetings over the next ten weeks.
The barbaric bloodsport has been given the go-ahead despite meetings seeing up to 170 or more people congregating in fields at a time when COVID19 cases and deaths are increasing around Ireland.
Two people are allowed to attend with each greyhound - one to bring the dog to the release area at the bottom of the field and another at the other end to catch the dog after the hare has been terrorised. In additional, 30 club members can attend “to facilitate the meeting”.
In contrast to the crowds gathering in coursing fields, just 15 people are allowed to be at “organised outdoor gatherings” (e.g. outdoor arts events, training events) and a maximum of 25 at wedding receptions (indoor or outdoor) and funerals.
Coursing is taking place after the government shamefully exempted it from COVID19 Level 3 restrictions.
The latest Level 3 measures state: “No matches or other sporting events should take place, with the following exceptions...approved coursing events” https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/ad569-level-3/
This exemption for coursers makes a mockery of public health guidelines.
The government’s decision to permit coursing is an insult to the vast majority who want the activity banned. A RED C opinion poll conducted last year showed that 77% of citizens want coursing banned, with just 9% wanting it to continue.
