Petition updateBan Blood Sports in IrelandCoursers’ failure to release hares an “EGREGIOUS BREACH” of licence

The Minister for Heritage, Darragh O’Brien has warned that a refusal by coursing clubs to release captured hares would be viewed as an “EGREGIOUS BREACH” of a licence his department issued in September and which was suspended last month.

The licence was suspended at the start of Level 5 restrictions but it is understood that hares have remained in captivity, with coursers refusing to release them.

Responding to Dail Questions from Deputies Paul Murphy, Jennifer Whitmore, Steven Matthews and Brendan Griffin, the Heritage Minister stated: “The licence issued by my Department to the Irish Coursing Club, to capture and tag hares was temporarily suspended with effect from 21 October 2020 as it was not clear that the netting of hares was compliant with the COVID 19 regulations.”

He said that his Department is aware that a number of coursing clubs had already captured hares and that they were told to set them free.

“As it would be at least 6 weeks before that suspension is lifted my Department instructed the Irish Coursing Club to inform coursing clubs that they should release captured hares back into the wild as soon as possible,” Minister O’Brien stated, adding “failure to release the hares will be viewed as an egregious breach of the licence and my Department will be obliged to take necessary action, including under the Wildlife Acts, in that regard.”

The Irish Council Against Blood Sports had called on Minister O’Brien to act to ensure that all hares in coursing compounds around the country were immediately released back to the wild under the supervision of National Parks and Wildlife Service rangers.

“Keeping hares, normally solitary creatures, in captivity in coursing compounds is completely unnatural and should never be permitted,” ICABS stated in an email. “There is also the very worrying issue of RHD2, the highly contagious virus that can spread easily between hares and which, it has previously been confirmed by former Arts and Heritage Minister Josepha Madigan, could wipe out the Irish Hare species. Hares affected by the virus suffer the most horrendous death, with swollen eyelids, partial paralysis and bleeding from the eyes and mouth.”

The government is once against being urged to announce a full and permanent ban on coursing - a bloodsport which a 77% majority of Irish citizens want banned (just 9% want it to continue, according to a RED C poll). This historic move for Irish wildlife would be widely welcomed in Ireland and around the world.

URGENT ACTION ALERT

Please contact Minister Darragh O’Brien and appeal to him to make permanent the temporary suspension of the coursing licence and to ensure that any coursers failing to comply with the order to release hares are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
