South Dublin County Councillor Yvonne Collins is the latest Fianna Fáil politician to express support for an end to cruel bloodsports.
"I support a long overdue ban on hare coursing and fox hunting," Cllr Collins confirmed in an email to ICABS this week.
Last month, party colleague Councillor Barbara-Anne Murphy (Wexford) also confirmed support for a ban.
"I support a ban on hare coursing in Ireland," Enniscorthy-based Councillor Murphy told ICABS.
It follows a statement from Wexford Fianna Fáil Councillor Andrew Bolger who came out in favour of a ban.
Lisa McDonald - also a Wexford Fianna Fáil councillor - has previously expressed her support for a coursing ban.
They are among a growing list of Fianna Fáil representatives calling for an end to coursing.
Cllr Anthony Molloy (Fianna Fáil, Donegal) recently told ICABS: “I am opposed to hare coursing. This is not a sport and it should be banned.”
Days earlier, Meath County Councillor Paul McCabe (Fianna Fáil) indicated his opposition to coursing, stating: “You can count on my full support”.
Other Fianna Fáil politicians to recently call for an end to coursing are Senators Erin McGreehan and Mary Fitzpatrick who both contacted Minister Darragh O’Brien to urge him to refuse a 2020-21 coursing licence.
Senator McGreehan, Fianna Fáil’s Seanad spokesperson on children, disability, equality and integration told ICABS that she “wrote to the Minister stating that I believe that there is no place for hare coursing in a modern Ireland.”
Senator Fitzpatrick “made representations to the Minister urging him not to grant the licence.”
Former Fianna Fáil leader and Taoiseach Bertie Ahern TD is also on record as supporting a ban. In a 1997 letter to ICABS, he declared: “I am totally opposed to hare coursing and I hope that...many more people reject hare coursing as a past-time, which can never justifiably be called a sport.”
Hares suffer and die in coursing – last season, the victims included hares who died with a spinal injury and a broken back and another with “an apparent leg injury”. Other hares have suffered broken legs, damaged toes, dislocated hips, etc. All the hares used in coursing suffer the fear and stress of being netted from the wild, transported in boxes and held in captivity for weeks/months before being forced to run for their lives from muzzled dogs. Those released back to the wild are at risk of later dying from stress-related capture myopathy.
The continuation of coursing shames Ireland. All our neighbouring jurisdictions (Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales) have all long since banned the bloodsport – as have most other civilised nations around the world.
There is overwhelming support among the public for a ban. Last September a RED C opinion poll found that 77% of citizens are in favour of a ban on coursing, while just 9% want it to continue.
