At least two of the newly elected TDs are in favour of a ban on cruel hare coursing.
Congratulations to Joe O’Brien of the Green Party who was elected in Dublin Fingal - the first ever by-election win for the Greens - and Malcolm Byrne (Fianna Fail) who was elected in the Wexford constituency.
Joe O’Brien has previously assured ICABS that he wants to see bloodsports banned. “Yes indeed I am [in favour of a ban on foxhunting and hare coursing],” he stated in a tweet in 2016.
Meanwhile, Malcolm Byrne, as a Wexford County Councillor, expressed opposition to coursing, saying he would “support any legislation at national level that would ban hare coursing”. The Fianna Fail politician’s statement came in response to an ICABS email in which we highlighted the suffering caused to hares used as live lures in coursing. In September 2010, Cllr Byrne stated: “I am personally opposed to hare coursing, which I view as cruel.”
The views of the other new TDs, Pádraig O’Sullivan (Fianna Fail, Cork North-Central) and Mark Ward (Sinn Féin, Dublin Mid-West) are currently unknown.
In the past, Pádraig O’Sullivan has described himself as “a bit of a dog lover” https://twitter.com/padraigosull/status/78135415554580480 Given the cruelty and killing involved in greyhound racing (6,000 dogs killed every year because they are not fast enough to win races), we hope that he will be among the TDs pushing for this activity to be ended.

URGENT ACTION ALERT
STOP THE STATE FUNDING FOR GREYHOUND RACING
Ahead of Tuesday, 3rd December when a vote is due to be taken on the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2019, please contact Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe and demand an end to state funding to greyhound racing and horse racing. Tell them to redirect the funds to the many deserving charities crying out for funding. Since 2001, horse and greyhound racing has received more than one a quarter billion euros of public funds.
Another €84 million to horse and greyhound racing was approved in Budget 2020. Much of the money given to horse racing ends up as prize money in the pockets of wealthy horse owners and trainers, while the funding for greyhound racing continues despite plummeting attendance at tracks due to shocking revelations about cruelty and killing.
