Foxes could be heard SCREAMING when a foxhunt invaded Achill Island, a European Election candidate has told ICABS.

Saoirse McHugh, the Green Party’s candidate for the Midlands-North-West Constituency, described the horror that unfolded for wildlife on the County Mayo island - “A fox hunt came to Achill a few years ago. The hunt went where ever it pleased - through people’s gardens, etc - and the screaming of the foxes was heard all over the village. People were really upset by this gruesome event. All for the entertainment of a few people.”

Responding to a query from ICABS, the Achill Islander said she views bloodsports, including foxhunting as “absolutely disgusting”.

“It is a prime example of the total disregard with which we treat our environment and wildlife and that disregard has brought us to this critical juncture where our entire society must change,” she added.

Saoirse McHugh is one of three Green Party representatives running in the European Parliament election - along with Dublin City Councillor Ciaran Cuffe and Senator Grace O’Sullivan. Voting in Ireland will take place on Friday 24 May.

Keep hunters off your land

If you are a landowner, make your land off-limits to hunters. Find out more about how to do this on our Farmers/Landowners Page - http://www.banbloodsports.com/farmers.htm Encourage all land-owning friends and family members in the countryside to show compassion and make their land a haven for wildlife. If hunters are denied access to land, the wildlife will be spared the suffering of cubhunting and foxhunting.
