Every click, every TV channel, seems to bring with it another tempting offer, another chance at relapse.

What about those who haven't reached out for help yet? Many won't have the same opportunity or foresight, and it's likely these ads will push them back into the throes of addiction.

Gambling addiction is a severe public health issue. It affects not just individuals but families and entire communities. According to research, gambling addiction can lead to severe mental health problems, financial ruin, and broken relationships. In Canada, particularly with the heightened advertising following legal expansions, more people stand on the brink of these negative outcomes.

Studies, like those from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, show a direct correlation between gambling advertisements and an increase in gambling behaviors, especially among vulnerable populations. By allowing these ads to continually flood our digital and traditional platforms, we are perpetuating this detrimental cycle of addiction. We are making it harder not just for addicts in recovery but for everyone, including our youth.

The federal government must recognize the urgency of this matter. Just as there are regulations on tobacco and alcohol advertising due to their potential for harm, so too should there be strict regulations—or an outright ban—on gambling advertising. This is a necessary step to protect not only current addicts but also future generations from ever falling into the traps of gambling addiction.
