The issue

I am a Type 1 diabetic and recently, I had an extremely close call that highlighted a dangerous oversight in Coca-Cola's rebranding strategy. While reaching into an esky, I grabbed what I assumed was a Coca-Cola Zero Sugar can, familiar with its previous easy-to-distinguish black labeling. To my shock, my partner pointed out that I had picked up a Coca-Cola Classic instead of the Zero Sugar variant. Had I consumed it unaware, I would have experienced a spike in glucose levels leading to potentially severe health consequences, including the risk of developing ketones that might have necessitated a hospital visit.

This incident is not just a personal anecdote; it highlights a critical lapse that can impact the health of many. There are approximately 1.6 million adults diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes globally. For us, mistaking a sugared beverage for a zero-sugar one due to similar branding isn’t merely an inconvenience; it's a threat to our well-being. Changing their iconic red Coke Zero cans to a design nearly indistinguishable from Classic Coke without close inspection is an oversight that can easily lead to such dangerous misidentifications.

The Coca-Cola Company has long professed a commitment to consumer safety and health. This commitment needs to extend into product packaging, ensuring that there is a clear, visual difference between products containing sugar and those without to prevent potential health hazards. A simple solution would be reverting to their previous black can design for Zero Sugar or incorporating an obvious label that can be identified quickly.

Diabetics aren't the only group affected; people with various dietary restrictions or health concerns also rely on clear labeling to make safe choices. Coca-Cola has the power to make a change that ensures everyone's safety when selecting their beverages. Let’s urge Coca-Cola to prioritize consumer health and safety by reverting the Zero Sugar writing back to black.
