The U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon, started in 2002, has been the leading competition for preparing students for the workforce with the knowledge of advancing energy savings and resilience in buildings and pushing the envelope across the renewable energy industry. Participation has included over 350 collegiate institutions with almost 30,000 students.

This year's competition dates have been delayed (the semi-finals were scheduled for February 21-22, 2025, the finals for April 25-27, 2025) and there is the distinct possibility that the competition will be cancelled. This year's Design Challenge has 122 teams from 93 collegiate institutions, representing 19 countries and 27 states/districts. All the student teams have been working on their projects since September, 2024.
