That expression, The Kipper Season, is one that was used by Brighton and probably other inshore fishermen. It refers I believe to the very slack early months of the year January to March, when sea fishing was unproductive and the fishermen and their families had to rely upon preserved fish 'kippers' until fresh fish catches improved.
As this and most markets, are quiet in these months, this term 'Kipper Season' was adopted by market traders and is still used by a few of the older ones of us.
Responses to this petition have slowed down a bit as well. Along with the rather outdated paper petitions that I have taken to the market on the few Saturdays that it hasn't rained, we now have about 600 signatures. Lots of supportive comments too. Thank you for these but more would help so please keep encouraging others to support us.

If you do visit this Market anytime soon you will find that there are lots of empty pitches, these are likely to be filled in the Spring and Summer months when the part time 'traders' take advantage of the fact that some of us have kept the Market going through the 'Kipper Season'. We have been filling some of the gaps by spreading beyond the marked boundaries to keep this looking like a Street Market.
That really is the point of this petition. The whole street had been a market for 100 years, lets continue to be a Market and look like one.
The picture that I have used today is of some of the staffs and walking sticks that I made to sell in the Market.
My pal, who was also my driver, has retired. So for the moment the table you can see will be big enough for all the stock I can carry on the bus. So I am not likely to need to spread beyond the pitch boundaries for the time being.
But I have started this and intend to see it through..
