Letter to Straits Times Forum

Dear all, On behalf of the cat lovers in Singapore, I will greatly appreciate if you can publish this letter in the forum. This matter has been ongoing for numerous years, yet appropriate actions are not taken. A developed country in Singapore should value animal rights. However, it appears that animals are constantly abused and tortured. It is highly disappointing that the authorities and relevant organisations are not doing much to alleviate their suffering. Take the 19 cats at Block 151 Meiling Street for example. They are being housed in cages for numerous years yet the relevant authorities and organisations have turned a blind eye to it. There are 2 to 3 cats in each cage. The lack of space and horrendous living conditions have taken a toll on their health and it is time we freed the cats for good. Is this the kind of values we are portraying to our younger generation and the world? Is it humane to confine the cats in cages 24/7 as long as they are fed? I will like to highlight the fact that SPCA's executive director, Dr Jaipal Singh Gill have commented about the above and agreed that cages are not suitable housing for cats. He pointed out that long-term confinement that restricted an animal's movement is also detrimental to its welfare. Housing cats in this manner is a breach of the Code of Animal Welfare (for Pet Owners). Also, AVA has claimed that it is currently investigation the matter. However, we have not heard any updates from them since. It appears that both SPCA and AVA are treating this matter with minimal importance as an important matter like this should be dealt with promptly. Best regards, Junelle
