Authorise the Use of Emotional Support Animals in the UK
The Issue
I am one of thousands of UK residents living with an emotional disability. My own journey with autism has been filled with challenges — stress, frustration, and the lasting effects of early trauma. Like so many others, I face these struggles daily — at school, at work, in public spaces, and even within my own home.
For many of us, Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) are more than pets — they are lifelines. Through unconditional affection and companionship, they provide essential emotional stability, helping to ease symptoms of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
In the United States, ESAs are already recognised as a legitimate form of mental health support — with over 200,000 people benefiting from their presence. Yet here in the UK, our laws have not kept pace. ESAs are not given the same recognition or protections as service animals for physical disabilities, leaving countless emotionally vulnerable individuals without access to this vital form of support.
We call on the UK Government and relevant authorities to officially recognise Emotional Support Animals and permit their inclusion across all areas of society — including schools, workplaces, and public spaces.
By taking this step, we can create a more compassionate and inclusive society — one where no one is denied the support they need to feel safe, calm, and understood.
Please sign this petition if you believe that everyone deserves access to every form of care and comfort essential to their wellbeing — including the support of Emotional Support Animals.
