Jamie Williams Free

At last some good news. Charges against Jamie Williams were dropped today. Jamie was charged under s119.4 of the Criminal Code (Foreign Incursions) for planning to travel to the middle east to involve himself in "hostile activity against a legitimate state". In this case Jamie Williams wanted to join the YPG in order to combat "Islamic State".....Think about that for a moment. If I were a prosecutor for the Commonwealth the last thing I would want to say is "Your honour, the Commonwealth of Australia believes that Mr Williams broke the law by wanting to join the YPG, an illegal entity to fight Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a legitimate government in Syria and should spend the rest of his days in prison"..Perhaps not exactly in those words but the irony and insanity of even having the trial would have been an embarrassment for the Government and against the very nature of our society. Mr Brandis, do the right thing now; dedicate the resources of the AFP to investigating real criminals, drop the investigations currently underway into Matthew Gardiner and Ashley Dyball and George Khamis, let them continue their lives without further consideration of this matter. Exempt the YPG-YPJ and the Peshmerga from the Foreign Fighters legislation. Do it now.
