Jamie Williams to be charged under Foreign Fighters Bill 2014

Many of you would have heard that Jamie Williams of Epping Victoria has been charged under section 119.4(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth) otherwise referred to as the amendments made under the Foreign Incursions Act 1978 and redrafted as the Foreign Fighters Bill 2014. The section 119.4(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth) relates specifically to "Preparations for incursions into foreign countries for purpose of engaging in hostile activities": The penalty for this under the act is a maximum custodial sentence of life. Think about that for a minute. Jamie Williams could grow old in prison and never see freedom again because he is alleged to have made preparations to engage in hostile activities. Ask yourself, How is this worth such a charge? Hostile to who exactly? What does preparations actually entail? Who was he alleged to be recruited by? Which legal state was he going to engage in hostile activities against? Why is he being charged against an old law designed to stop mercenary wars in Africa during the 1970's, a law that never saw anyone prosecuted? Why did the authorities wait six months and then decide to arrest Jamie Williams the day after ISIL fighter Adam Brookman was returned to Australia and charged under Terrorism laws? Is this really in the public interest? Is Jamie Williams a criminal? a menace to society? a cold blooded mercenary? is he instead simply someone who wanted to help in the only way he thought he could? Isn't it time that the authorities focused their resources on those in Australia who are preparing to depart to Syria to join ISIL and actual terror groups and those that continue to promote extremism in any form here at home? Isn't it time they started paying attention to people who actually mean to do innocent people harm?
