Please read the attached newspaper article. I have isolated a few words, quoted by the PMH Oncologist in the article: "...although survival for children with brain tumours, known as medulloblastoma, had improved over the past 30 years, survival rates for the past decade had 'reached a plateau' well below that of other childhood cancers, such as leukaemia. In addition, survivors are often left with devastating lifelong side effects,” I started this petition because of the utter disbelief & horror I felt when I witnessed a young family I know have their parental rights just simply snapped away from them. After a devastating diagnosis for their youngest child, they were subjected to bullying and threats, and ultimately a court order, that was specifically ordered to be kept secret from them until a day before the court date. So this issue is one of parental rights, rather than treatment options, although in this case one becomes the other, because if the treatment options were sound, then there would be no problem with consent. I'm sorry if I'm repeating myself here, most of you will know the story to date. So you will also understand my consternation when I read the attached newspaper article. Here we have the PMH Oncology Dept justifying a $400k grant to try and improve frustratingly poor results from their current treatment protocols, yet they can all huddle together in a court room, like jackals, and have the Family Court judge order a 6-year old boy succumb to this very same treatment. What am I missing here? They're due in court again on the 16th May, where they are hoping to be given permission to start radiating this child's brain and spinal cord. In fact, the hospital has already prepared to start the treatment on the afternoon of the 16th. I've never known the true meaning of the word 'heartbreak' til now. You all know it's wrong that's why you've signed. I have had legal threats that this petition will be closed down. So if it does disappear, stay posted - I will be back!
