Australia’s system for controlling inflation is unfair.

Australia’s system for controlling inflation is unfair.
The issue
Australia’s system for controlling inflation is unfair.
Every time the RBA raises interest rates, the same people are hit the hardest:
- families with mortgages
- workers with car loans or personal debt
- low‑income households with no savings buffer
They don’t just get hit once. They get hit three times:
- Prices rise — groceries, fuel, rent, everything.
- Repayments rise — mortgages, credit cards, car loans.
- Jobs are put at risk — employers cut staff or hours because higher rates slow the economy.
Meanwhile, people with savings actually benefit from higher rates. The burden isn’t shared. It’s concentrated on the people with the least room to move.
There is a better way.
A sliding GST rate, managed by the RBA, would spread the responsibility across the whole economy instead of punishing one group. It targets spending directly, reduces inflation pressure, and avoids pushing households into crisis every time inflation rises.
This matters because Australia needs an inflation‑control system that is fair, modern, and aligned with how people actually live today. No family should be pushed into hardship simply because the only tool we use is the one that hurts them most.
It’s time to modernise Australia’s inflation tools and protect the people who are carrying the heaviest load.
