Thank you for all of the support so far for my campaign!! ❤️
This initiative started off by asking Aus Post to include traditional place names in addresses, and has now evolved into a bigger campaign calling for the creation of a database of traditional place names, with respectful and comprehensive consultation with Elders and community leaders.
This is important for data preservation purposes, but also so that we can give our Elders an opportunity to speak their truth and have it recorded.
The AIATSIS map is a good starting point, but it isn’t entirely accurate - it goes against what the Elders say in some areas, and doesn’t show some Countries/Nations at all - so we need an updated data source, created by First Nations people, and verified by Elders as a source of truth.
I’m working on the very early stages of something in the background, so it would be really helpful if people could get the word out and share as much as possible to get this on the national agenda.
If you are keen to support my campaign, please follow my accounts on Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram (@place_names_in_addresses), share this petition and spread the word!
Also… if you use traditional place names in your mail/parcels/drivers licence/car rego/utility bills/assignment cover sheets/email signatures/business cards/anywhere(!), make sure you post a pic on socials and tag me so I can repost and we can inspire more people to think of ways to acknowledge traditional place names :)
Thank you!!! ❤️
