Hey friends,
We’re so grateful for your support and solidarity.
But right now, the campaign is at a bit of a standstill.
The government isn’t moving, not yet, anyway - and one question keeps coming up again and again: “If not January 26, then when?”
It’s a fair question, and one that can feel tricky to answer, especially with so many views and emotions tied to this date.
To keep the conversation moving forward, we believe it’s important to explore meaningful alternatives to the public holiday on Jan 26 that people can sit with, reflect on and talk about.
One idea that we believe has real merit, that we’ve been thinking through with others, is a small but significant shift: creating an 'Australian Long Weekend'.
The ‘Australian Long Weekend’ concept is to shift the public holiday to the second last Monday in Jan and would create a consistent summer long weekend, always falling between January 18 and 24.
Importantly, this long weekend would never fall on January 26, creating respectful distance from a date that represents deep pain for many First Nations people.
You can read more about the 'Australian Long Weekend' idea on our blog.
We’d love for you to add your voice and sign a new petition supporting this proposal.
Because figuring out what the alternative looks like is a conversation worth having.
Yours in the struggle,
Laura, Sarah & the CTG fam x
