Increase Lighting and Emergency Poles in West Campus

The University of Texas West Campus includes many different types of students from all over the world largely between the ages of 18-22. This selection of young adults all come together with the shared goal of obtaining a university degree. Parents from all over the state, country and world send these young adults to school with the hopes that they mature into their own individuals and become productive citizens of the country and world. Despite these lofty shared goals of students, parents, and faculty, these goals can quickly be cut short when the safety of the campus is compromised.

In an environment with so many young adults, it is imperative that safety is kept as the absolute priority on campus. Campuses harvest a unique place in which young adults often find themselves in places that they must walk, often long distances, alone at night. Although there are resources on campus such as SureWalk and free Lyft rides for students, these resources are often exacerbated and may not have the capacity to provide to all students. Despite all other efforts that must also take place, there is no way to get around the campus's need for brighter street lighting in West Campus. Furthermore the increasing of emergency poles could increase safety for students. These poles can be used to call the University Police Department for issues ranging from assualt/ stalking to needing to jumpstart a car. Having access to this type of assistance in these situations and having a more well-lit campus could be two easy ways to help increase safety on campus. No one attending the university should have to live their life on campus feeling unsafe, no matter their gender, stature, how late they study, or how often they walk alone. This will in no way solve all safety concerns in West Campus, but the University and city should be doing their absolute best to provide the utmost safety to its students and young adults, and these are two easy and very necessary fixes that should take place. Emergency poles should be found all over campus and ideally, there should not be any dark part of the streets where students live, study, and otherwise occupy.
