Auli’i Cravalho and Renee Rapp romcom

The Issue

They’re both hot. They’re both gay. And we wanna see them kiss. We adored them in the re-imagination of the Mean Girls movie musical (2024) but their love story was lacking. We all know what they felt. The tension between them: palpable. Undeniable. Rejanis deserves to live their truth, as do Renee and Auli’i. And based on the incredible amount of fan fictions that people have written about these two, all that needs to be done is choosing which one is the script. Short film, documentary, 2 part series (one for each POV) or a classic film. I’m speaking for the entire queer community when I say it is vital to our health to see these two star in a romcom together. After having so many good queer shows canceled it’s time to give the people what they want.

Auli’i Cravalho: Handcrafted by God herself. Most angelic and powerful voice. OW-LEE-EE. Previously played the queer character Aj Campos in the movie ‘Crush’. So hot. Go watch it.

Renee Rapp: President queer. A literal mythical siren. Does not have media training. Previously played the queer character Leighton Murray in the show ‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’. Also hot. Go watch it.

In general the media needs more queer and wlw shows and movies. There are around 170+ tv shows with queer women and trans characters that got cancelled after one season. There are too many statistics to name here, I encourage everyone to do their own research and base their opinions on that, HOWEVER, let’s just all agree that whether you’re LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, AAPI, or anything else I may not have mentioned, representation in media, both if front of and behind the camera, is so important. To see yourself represented in a character is a feeling like no other, and it’s a shame not everyone gets to experience that.

My pitch (so seriously joking in an unserious way):

Aj Campos goes to Essex college on a track scholarship. She meets Whitney and they become good friends. Leighton and Aj bump into each other one day and immediately have major beef over something. One night Whitney invites Aj over to study. Just as Aj gets there Leighton is leaving for a party and they both realize the person they have in common. There’s a quick little banter and Leighton leaves for her party. The study session ends up going pretty late so as Aj left she sees Leighton stumbling down the hall, drunk. She thinks she’s so pathetic and just wanted to ignore her but Leighton made it pretty impossible to ignore her. Aj helps her back to her dorm, Leighton gives her a quick, passionate kiss (in a funny and completely drunk way) and flops into bed. Aj can’t comprehend what just happened and walks away confused. The next day Leighton runs into Whitney and Aj jogging down the street. They stop to talk for a minute and Aj asks how Leighton is feeling. Leighton pretends she doesn’t remember what happened. Whitney and Aj continue on their run before they head back to Whitney’s dorm. They have another study session that Leighton helps with because it’s Math. Aj is impressed by Leighton and finds herself staring at her every now and again on accident. As the study session ends Leighton and Aj leave Whitney’s room and they all say their goodbyes. Leighton asks Aj to talk for a second so they go into Leighton's room to chat. Leighton confesses that she remembers what happened that night she was drunk but that she didn’t know if she had made Aj uncomfortable. Aj said she wasn’t uncomfortable just confused. Leighton asks what she was confused about. Aj says she just didn’t understand why she kissed her. She understood that Leighton was drunk and drunk people do dumb things but usually kissing someone you hate isn’t on that list. Leighton confesses that she doesn’t hate Aj and they share a moment of eye contact before Aj says she doesn’t hate Leighton either…anymore. They both laugh and share another moment of eye contact before Aj says she should probably go. They say their goodbyes and both spend the rest of the night trying to comprehend what just happened. They run into each other a few times over the next week, share smiles, glances, small conversations and banter. Then one evening Whitney says she’s going for a run with Aj. After the run Aj goes into the bathroom to take a shower and get ready for bed. Leighton, already in the bathroom, sees Aj in the mirror as she walks in and they share a nervous hello. They sit in awkward silence for a little while before they both go for the same thing and bump into each other (classic). They share gentle sorries and then stand in silence, both glancing back and forth between each others eyes and lips. They back away from each other nervously. Aj says she needs to go before Leighton reminds her she came in here to take a shower. Aj laughs nervously saying she forgot. Leighton jokingly asks how she could forget she needs to take a shower when she smells from running. Aj jokes back saying at least she has an excuse to smell. Leighton laughs saying she literally just showered. Aj replies saying maybe she needs a lesson on how to properly shower. Leighton walks a little closer to Aj saying “maybe you should teach me”. Aj, flustered, says what? Leighton lets her robe go and says “teach me”. They shower together and do gay stuff (obviously). And then they live happily ever after.
